From 1991 Máté worked as a journalist for the economic daily Világgazdaság (World Economy) then for the economic daily Napi Gazdaság. He specialised in social security and macro economy. He participated in developing the structure of Napi Online, and then in launching the portal. Until 2002, he was the editor of the Hungarian Economy column, and news director of NAPI Online.

In 1996-97, at the request of ministerial commissioner István Győrffy, Máté became communications advisor of the pension reform. He took a diploma in economic journalism at a course held by Reuters and attended a reporter training course held by the Hungarian Radio. He was a permanent expert advisor to the morning economic radio programme Money Minutes.

From May 2002 to February 2004 he was head of the Media and Communications Department of the Finance Ministry, and had a key role in shaping the ministry’s communication strategy. He was also the spokesperson of the ministry.

From March 2004, he was consultant, then senior consultant at ISSUES Management Communications Consulting Ltd., and in June 2008, he took the post of strategic director.
